I was unsure when I first picked up Tom Gates, as I wondered if it was just someone hanging on the success of the Wimpy Kid books - but these are fantastic in their own right.

Tom is a wonderful character, and his supporting cast is amusing too (I particularly like Mr Fullerman). The books may seem daunting due to their size, although the format of them means that most readers will soon rattle through them - they're very visual reads, which would make them very suitable for reluctant readers...and I think they'd also be useful for bridging the gap between fully illustrated books to those without any pictures at all.

A great series; I can't wait for the next one!
