Bernard Fine had two bad relationships with women who both ditched him and went to San Fransisco leaving him in New York. The first girl, Sheila, was his mate in school and she decided that she doesn't want to marry and settle down and such left him only to reply to him once later on to claim living on a bus with other people and having two kids.
The next woman, was a model and aspiring actress. She used Bernie to get money and then when he finds her sleeping with a director in their yacht, she leaves him for San Fransisco as well to become an actress.
Then he finds himself working at a department store called Wolff's. He later brings improvements to their running and as such they keep him on, sends him to business school and as such Bernie found his future as a businessman.
Then one day, his boss Paul Berman announces to him that they are sending him to San Fransisco to manage their new store. So without any option he is on his way to the place where both his women ditched him for.
There he meets his life when he runs into Jane, a cute five year old lost in the store admiring the swimsuits. She got lost from her mother and begins to cry but Bernie helps her out and takes her for a banana split while they talk. They become close and when her mother arrived, Elizabeth O'Reilly, there is immediate attraction. They begin a relationship and very fast find themselves engaged to be married.
They enjoy their married life, and even more when she is pregnant for his son. Then when Alexander Arthur Fine is born they couldn't be happier. But when four months after Liz still wasn't recovering from the pains and looks frail, pale and sick, their world began to crumble slowly...
This story travels through Bernard Fine's life as he struggles with love, pain, guilt and trying to survive without the one he loved so much.
