“This was an interesting book about the fallout from a mother's affair and her eventual desertion of her family for her lover. Maria Dell was stuck in a loveless marraige to an older man who treated her like a posession. She loved her two children, but not enough to stay in a miserable relationship, so she leaves - with disastrous consequences. She winds up killing her lover, going to jail and losing all contact with her children for the next twenty years. The book opens after her release from prison and finds Maria creating a new life for herself as she is haunted by the old.
I like this book overall, but there are two characters that I really would like to have known more about - Hilton Dells and Mai, Maria's mother. All we know about Hilton is that he is successful and harsh. We know even less about Mai who was the product of an interracial relationship between her Swedish mother and Black father. ”
