What lovely characters and chilling reality of the hunger people suffered, yet their desire to make it through another day and hopefully escape to a land of opportunity, America. This reflects the reality of the millions of Irish who fled their homeland for a better life. It is so well written that you can't believe Giff didn't live right there with the Ryan family. ”

She handles the pressure of taking care of her family with grace and wisdom of someone much older than her 12 years, but she never loses her childhood. She is still adventurous and curious but not recklessly so. All of the characters have depth and bring the Great Irish Famine to life vividly. ”

These books are very well written and have a lot of great information about the irish potato famine. Even though the characters are fictional the facts are true and in the future it would offer a lot of information about our history so it wouldn't be lost and forgotten.”
