  • Nory: Main character, young Irish girl, has two older sisters and a little brother. Has to learn quickly how much strength and courage she has to help herself and her family survive.
  • Patch: Nory's little 3 year old brother. Loves Nory, misses food, very attached to Nory because she is a mother figure to him.
  • Maggie: Nory's oldest sister. Nory sees her as wise and beautiful. Moves to New York with her husband to start a life together.
  • Anna: At first Nory is afraid of Anna, but soon realizes they have a special connection and friendship that can never be broken.
  • Devlin: The man who comes around to do the dirty work for Lord Cunningham. He collects the rent and delivers the bad news when a house is going to be tumbled to the ground because of overdue taxes.
  • Lord Cunningham: Englishman who raises the taxes, scares and bullies all of the townspeople. He takes all of their land and has no sympathy for the dying and starving people, he just wants to land for himself. Sends all of the food to England while the people starve.
  • Da: Nory's father, off on a fishing boat trying to make money for the family so they can pay the rent.
