There were some good elements, and the concept was pretty solid, but at times I got bored. The characters were believable, up to the end. The twist didn't really pan out for me. I could stick with it - so, it wasn't completely awful. It just wasn't particularly gripping.”

The story intertwines the lives and viewpoints of the evil vampire Quincy Harker; haunted Lieutenant John Shaw who can't seem to do anything to prevent his sister, Lily, from being drawn in by the monster's charm; Lily herself, who is confused by her attraction to this dark man; and Mary Seward, John's loving fiance, who is the only key to the complete destruction of the Tepe bloodline. ”

Not that the premise wasn't interesting. I mean, who wouldn't want to read a speculative continuation of Bram Stoker's Dracula? And Kate Cary's writing style was rather good, especially considering the knowledge she had to have about Dracula in order to write the book.
So what threw me off? In one word: characterization. No, the character development wasn't awful, but neither was it what I wanted to see. The character of Mary Seward was rather well-developed, but the rest of the cast paled in comparison to the characters present in Stoker's classical gothic masterpiece.
I also had some problems with the plot. With the exception of the beginning and a few additions along the way, I felt like it was almost an exact replica of Dracula. It seemed like there wasn't much creativity present in Bloodline at all.
Finally, I absolutely loathed what this book did to the character of Mina. Bloodline took the bright, pure, persevering heroine of Dracula and completely annihilated her, turning her into an evil, seductive adulteress that didn't even slightly resemble the character present in Dracula. With that being said, I felt the complete and utter 180 that John Shaw did at the end of the book didn't stay true to his character at all. In general, the ending felt abrupt and unrealistic. Overall, I'm disappointed to say that Bloodline fell a bit flat.
