Elena is miss popular with a capital P. She is the queen of her school, she knows it, she revels in it. She has a cute boyfriend and the envy of every girl in school, yet she isn’t exactly happy or satisfied. Cue Stefan. Stefan is hot with a capital H. He is mysterious, considerate and...

Ok, so this isn't quite as good as I remember it. Of course now I am a 28 year old reading it as opposed to a 13 year old or whatever I was the first time I read it. Now I have Twilight to compare it to which is now so much better it's like this book on steroids. But I do remember that when I was in junior high, I LOVED this book series. It was the Twilight of my junior high years. I am re-reading it now because of the WB series that is currently on TV. While the show is honestly NOTHING like the book series except for a few character names and once in a while a small plot point so that they can have an excuse to even call it by the same name, I do like the TV series. But it had been so long since I read the books I felt like I needed a refresher so I could catch the minor reference in the rare instances that they occur. Now at 28 I am finding the story a little choppy and far fetched and unbelievable and I'm not as invested in the characters. I'm currently having a hard time even really liking Elena. I didn't remember her being so stuck up and cliche. As a 13 year old it had enough depth back then for me, now I find it a little shallow and underdeveloped. So I guess age definately makes a difference with this series. I am decidedly out of the targeted age bracket now, so don't take my opinion with too much weight. I know I did love this series once upon a time. Just not so much anymore.

This is the first book in the Vampire Diaries series.

I read about the new TV series based on this series and saw part of the first episode and got interested in reading the books so I picked this book and thought I would give it a try.. The book flew!!

It was such a fast read it was amazing..

Elena Gilbert is the famous high school teenager who has everything and gets everything she wants including boys.. Well except Stefan Salvatore who she wants but seems immune to her ways.. well actually he seems to be avoiding her.

Stefan Salvatore is trying to live a normal life with humans and avoid any attachments.. but Elena is becoming a distraction.. who said being a vampire was easy :)

Then strange things start to occur in their small town, people are getting hurt and then a man gets killed.. all the fingers point at one direction.. Stefan!!

Is he innocent? Or is he doing something evil and blacking out?

I have totally enjoyed this book, it's young adult and so much fun, kinda reminded me of Twilight since they are all high school students..
I was so engrossed in the story and time just flew.. I had to peel the book out of my hands because it was getting so late and I had to sleep.. if I let my self go I would have finished it in one night!
So if you are a Twilight fan you might think of giving this a try.. !

    Vampires are so COOL ;)

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:

His tutor had often said it: An aristocrat should dress as befits his position. If he does not, he is showing contempt for other. Everyone had a place in the world, and his place had once been among the nobility. Once.

His tutor had had another saying: Evil will never find peace. It may triumph, but it will never find peace.

In that instant, Elena was aware that she was beautiful. It wasn't just the dress, or the way her hair was done. She was beautiful in herself: slender, imperial, a thing made of silk and inner fire. She saw his lips part slightly, reflexively, and then she looked up into his eyes.

This was where she belonged, and she had found it at last. With Stefan, she was home.

It is the history of a girl called 16-year-old Elena. She returns of a travel to France, for his home town Fell's Church. After every summer holidays, of turn to the classrooms, Elena meets his friends again. And a old friend, that then she discovers that she is not any more so his friend so. In his school there is a new pupil, Stephen Salvatore. Mysterious, enigmatic, sensual and absolutely lovely is this new pupil. After several attempts of approximation without result, Elena decides which Stephen will be of her, cost what to cost (and then it will cost something). Along the history, Elena will discover why Stephen ignored it in the beginning, as well as the obscure past erases, and the secret, which Stephen never intends to reveal him. This first book of the series of L.J.Smith is surprising, and it will do so that you read up to the last book.
'This book will do so that the reader, does not stop reading up to reaching the end ' Monise B.

I feel like this is a book written for overly sappy brainless tweens. Tweens that absorb every kind of vapid teen media out there like it's a manual for their life.

The main character Elena is painfully unlikeable. She's shallow and completely self-centered. All of her feelings of humiliation from Stefan's avoiding her to even her empathy for Stefan's isolation come off as just whining from a spoiled teenager. Her vampire love interest Stefan is equally painful. His character's like a diet version of what a vampire should be. All the danger, mystery, and angst that comes with being a cliche vampire character is introduced too early on in the story and comes off as extremely shallow and unconvincing.

Put the two together as a couple and you get one terribly written story. The second the two kiss it's like insta-love. It's not even like a "I maybe love you" it's a "Oh we were meant for each other, I love you" which is completely ridiculous given that it was their first kiss and they haven't even had a normal conversation prior to it.

All in all I think this story is in dire need of some character development and better pacing. I feel like the author quickly smacked the two characters together in order to get at the meat of the story. Unfortunately, that ruins the book for me so I can't even enjoy what's left of the story.

Yes, Smith told the story before Meyer, but her characters are not as mysterious or charming as Edward and Bella sometimes come off. There is no satisfying ending as books one and two seem to be one long story cut in half, but I could not be bothered to read the second.

I wouldn't say it's boring, but maybe it focus too much on just romance. The thrill factor - a factor that i'm trying to look for in a vampire related book - isn't that of what i expected.

Maybe there's lack of sufficient details for me to "fall in love" in the characters, i was feeling that Elena doesn't suit to be a leading role at the start.

Not really one that i would recommend people older than young adults to read.
