I have not yet read the more popular novel by this author, so I didn't have any expectations. This collection of short stories was a great read. I liked the interesting and odd topics (ranging from nude acrobatics to radium) and look forward to reading this author's novel as well.

Beautiful, emotionally evoking... This book is a collection of short stories that are really beautifully written. The first person singular is unique and quirky and ultimately heartbreaking. Favourite was the story about the tightrope walking circus folk. Trust and release. Ah boy.

Its a collection of short stories, some more interesting then others. I loved that I had to read them more then once to understand some of them and I certainly plan to pick up the book again. I think my favorite was Aristotle's Lantern.

I'd actually rate it 3 and a half. Its a good book, with very interesting, twisted and different stories but the one thing they have in common apart from "Love" is a sort of depressing feel. Each story gave me the same feelings and it wasn't love and usually not sympathy. Is it worth reading? Possibly yes, possibly no.

I don't normally enjoy short story anthologies as much as novels, but this collection was really good.

    Captivating Short Stories

The author has gracefully portrayed the characters in these spellbound stories. Without the emotion overflow from her previous novel " the Memory Keeper's Daughter", these short stories have the right touch of sensations.

With different time, place and culture settings, the stories interwove a mixed feeling towards these melancholy characters with a tinge of exotics.

She is a very good writer. very different stories but after i got more than half way thru, they started getting to me. there were all kinda sad or depressing. couldn't take anymore. didn't finish. i will check out her other books though.

I read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter last year and didn’t particularly care for it—I didn’t like most of the characters in the novel—but I loved the writing. This anthology was particularly enjoyable because it gave me a chance to soak up Kim Edwards’s writing while reading stories that I was enjoying; I particularly liked “The Invitation,” “Aristotle’s Lantern,” and “Thirst.”

I read this book while traveling the Mid West, and I have to say the variety of stories and topics really kept you interested. The Secrets of a Fire King was my favorite of the two.
