I've heard alot about Maya Angelou but have never read any of her poetry. This book, though small in size, packs alot in it's small size. I re-read each of the 4 poems (somewhat long poems, as in not 3 or 4 lines that I thought of Poems was before) twice. Once silently, once outloud. I definatley believe that reading poems outloud is a necessity to get the correct meaning. This is a must read for all women.

Maya Angelou has always been one of my favorite poetest since childhood and when you read her poems you read a little about yourself and those in your life. She is one of the mentors that started me writing at a young age and today because of her and a couple of others Nikki Giovanni and Sonja Sanchez I am a published poet as well.

Great book to have, quick read, excellent reference for quotes by one of the greatest poets that has ever lived. She is truly a phenomonal woman.

I was elated when I found this book at a thrift shop, quickly bought it and read it on the way back home. It's a great testimony to how an incredible voice can make any woman feel that they could obtain whatever that is impossible, and make it theirs. My favourite poem is 'Phenomenal Woman' and I love how Angelou used feminine sensuality as a great strength:

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    But they can't touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
    I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I'm a woman

    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me. (Phenomenal Woman)

    An excellent poetry read.
