"They were young, educated, and both virgins on this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible. But it is never easy."

So begins "On Chesil Beach", and Ian McEwan astonishes me once again -- who but he would...

What a boring little book about 2 sexually naive, repressed young people. The 60's weren't THAT long ago.

a book that stays with you about a week after you read it. extremely well written. subtle but deep in it's message about intimate relationships - what makes them work and what can destroy them.

A painful and poignant exploration of a bride and groom's wedding night on the cusp of the sexual revolution.

This was a gift. A very small, very fast read. But I remember feeling fairly low afterwards - I think it was a very sad story.

Bizarre story of two newlyweds who have trouble consummating their marriage. Did not like the author's writing style. Again...bizarre and depressing.

My least favorite of his novels thus far. One poignant segment-- about page 81 when Edward speaks of his family. I'd like to read a book, instead, about the lives of Lionel and Marjorie.

Honest, beautiful and brutal at the same time.

Recommended to me by my father... I think this book just really annoyed me. Or the characters did. But it wasn't the really passionate, shouting at the book/telly frustration I've had with other books, just a kind of mild annoyance at their lack of communication. I did think it was made more interesting because of the era it was set in-1960's just on the brink of the sexual revolution-but had it not been for that I think that I would have given up a few pages in. Didn't inspire me to read any other books by Ian McEwan.
