When my 8th graders read this book, they came to think of Anne Frank as a role model for them. She was someone who always had hope even in the worst circumstances. My students expressed feelings of regret when she died. We talked a lot about stereotypingand how even though the Jewish people were hated as a race, by reading this girl's story, we could all see that individuals have personal worth and do not deserve to be hated just because of the genes that make up their DNA.
