Princess in the Spotlight (The Princess Diaries, Vol. 2)

by Meg Cabot

Or if I can sit down without getting wrinkles in the back of my skirt? Or if I know how to say 'thank you' in Swahili? Shouldn't my future... (read more)

Different from the movie(s) and better, of course. Still the same charming teenage princess as the first book in the series; an interesting read with diverse and well-defined characters.

An awesome second volume full of all the stuff that made the first one incredible. New complications always arise and things somehow work out, even at their lowest point.

This book is great! I think every girl can relate to the character (even if you're not a princess). The story is funny and cute. i love it!

Adorable follow-up to the first book.

Mia suddenly finds herself thrust in the spotlight, and she really does not want to be there. She is an awkward teenager just trying to make it through teenage angst, and now she is preparing to be introduced to her "people."

I did not read this - I listened to Ann Hathaway read it. She was fantastic! I felt she captured the character of Mia as I imagined her in the first book. Of course, she did play her in the movie, so I guess that is expected.

This sequel to The Princess Diaries is sadly not as good as the first: it offers a few good jokes, but not as many as in the first book. The main disappointment I had on reading this was how repetitive it was - how it recycled the same themes, jokes and predictable plot as the first. What seemed fresh and genuinely funny in the first book now seems dull, mainly because the reader has heard it all before, if they've read the first book. Multiple references to Fat Louie swallowing a sock, Grandmere's tattooed-on eyeliner and Mia's horror at having her Algebra teacher dating her mother become quite tired. And Mia has not matured at all as a person since the first book - meaning that the plot is basically just a rehash of the types of situations she faced in The Princess Diaries. Despite that, Princess in the Spotlight is still fun and funny; and it makes for a great light read. However, the fact that the series has several more volumes is not inspiring - hopefully things won't go downhill from here.
