“A great text to use with the theme of dragons. It tells an important story of being happy with who you are, not who people want you to be.”Deborah wrote this review Monday, October 7, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This is a cute fantasy story written by Robert Munsch. It is about a princess who is waiting for a prince to rescue her from the fire breathing dragon. Prince after prince gets eaten by the dragon. The princess has a plan, and the only clothes she can find to wear is a paper bag. After putting on the paper bag, she outsmarts the dragon, making him fall asleep and she opens the door to escape, only to come face to face with her prince. Her prince decides that she is too ragged to marry him, and the princess goes on her merry way, happy not to marry him.

“The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is a funny read that teaches an important lesson in the end. Elizabeth is a princess that is set to marry the prince Ronald. All is well and Elizabeth is happy until one day a big dragon comes and destroys her clothes and her castle. All that she has left is a paper bag to dress herself in to go and safe her prince. Elizabeth is a smart girl and very cleverly outsmarts the dragon. She shows up to save her prince and he is very rude. He does not want to be saved by a girl wearing a paper bag. Elizabeth decides she does not need to be with the prince. She does not need to be treated badly and she does not save him. I think this fun story lets people know that you need to treat people nicely no matter what. They will not always be there in the end if you do not. I read this book to my students and they thought it was so good. They are all pretending to read it now to each other.
Levels: Interest Level-K-2 but my students are prek, Grade Level Equivalent-3.5, Lexile-740L, Guided Reading Level-K (scholastic.com)”
“Life is grand for Princess Elizabeth until a dragon destroys her castle and clothes and steals the prince she is planning to marry. Wearing nothing but a paper bag, she follows the dragon’s tracks and uses tricky mind psychology to exhaust the fierce dragon of his fire breath and energy. When the thankless prince criticizes Princess Elizabeth’s looks, she decides that he is a “bum” and will not marry him after all. This humorous and sarcastic fairytale satire is extended by the cartoon style drawings. An excellent picture book to use within a fairy tale unit as well as to discuss author’s tone, characterization and satire.”Ashlee B. wrote this review Thursday, July 25, 2013. “I loved reading this book when I was younger because it is about a princess who doesn't have to find the prince to be happy.”Lauren wrote this review Monday, April 29, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The princess to marry the prince but a dragon comes and kidnaps the prince, so the princess goes on a journey to rescue her prince. Throughout the journey the princess has to be smarter the the dragon to get her prince back. The author did a good job of having a different ending to this book. I would use this with my student to show them that there could be different ending to a story, I would do an activity where they would choose one of their favorite fairytale books and come up with a different ending. ”Erica wrote this review Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
