“I have read all of Brenna Yovanoff's other novels and loved them and their dark atmosphere and poetic prose. I feel Paper Valentine veers sharply away from Yovanoff's other works and although the writing is still wonderful, the setting, atmosphere, and characters are totally different. Hannah seeing her best friend as a ghost, has a creepy potential but is hardly adressed as a major plot point and the main character treats it as normal. Hannah also has a love interest that pops up out of nowhere and is unnecessary to the main plot, in which a string of unsolved murders is terrifing the town and Hannah decides to investigate. I hate giving this author this poor of a review and perhaps if I hadn't gone into it expecting a specific type of story I would have enjoyed it more, but overall I really did feel this story was disjointed, predictable, and at times boring. However, Yovanoff's writing is beautiful and I will gladly read her future works.”
