The book was awesome, and still better than the movie. The ending is sad, though

"Where the Red Fern Grows is a really, REALLY sad story about a boy who lives in the country, and has always wanted two hunting dogs. He saves up some money and buys them. The story is about all their adventures and undeniable love for each other.

This month’s Chai reading genre was historical fiction. I chose to read the book Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. A historical fiction book to me is a book that has to do with the past, but adds in fake characters to make it more entertaining. I also think that historical fiction can be very entertaining and educational at the same time.

There was a boy named Billy who lived in the Ozark Mountains with his family. His whole life he has always wanted coon hunting dogs. Over time he grows sick and will not eat because he wants dogs so badly. Then Billy gets an idea on how to buy two dogs, he will sell vegetables and berries to the fishermen who fish at the river by his house. Eventually after two years Billy has enough money for the two dogs he has long wanted. He goes to town to gets his dogs and names the girl Little Ann and the boy Old Dan. After he gets home he trains his dogs how to hunt coons (raccoons). He teaches them all the tricks raccoons will pull on any dogs. Little Ann and Old Dan work as one, never leaving each others side. Billy finds out that Old Dan is more aggressive and Little Ann is smarter than most hunting dogs. Old Dan and Little Ann eventually get very good at hunting. Billy’s Grandpa enters them into the World Coon Hunting Championship. Do they win? What happens to Little Ann and Old Dan?

I thought this was a really good book, because I could never put it down. Also, when I was reading this book it made me feel like I was watching the events happen before my eyes. The book made me grow close to the characters and made me feel like I was part of the story. I also thought the book was good because the plot was always entertaining, and full of action. I would recommend this book to fifth graders and up, because there were parts of the story that were pretty gruesome, and one part that is very sad. If you are looking for a book to read I would highly recommend reading it. I would give this book a nine out of ten, because it was a very good book, but some parts were very slow moving.

I liked this book because of the dogs. The boy raises two hound pups and trains them to hunt. The ending was sad, but the battle was great.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a love for hunting and dogs. Some of the main characters are the dogs Old Dan and Little Ann along with their owner Billy. Between the two dogs, Little Ann is the calm and smart one to where Old Dan is the ruthless killing machine. As for Billy, he is determined and when he sets his mind to something, he doesn't end until it is done. The climax of the story is when the dogs die. There is a terrible accident and the poor red hounds die. And where they were buried, a red fern grows. The theme of the story is no matter what, pets are around no matter what. So if you like hunting and have a care for dogs, read this book.
