Where The Red Fern Grows is written by Wilson Rawls and is a realistic fiction about a boy named Billy and his hunting dogs in the Cherokee hills. One day Billy found an ad for: one hound for 25 dollars, so Billy saves 50 dollars for two years and asks his grand pa to order the pups. When Billy goes to town to get his dogs he runs into a group of kids who beat him up. On his way back he thinks about names and comes across a tree that has the names Dan and Ann and names them Old Dan and Little Ann. After a while of training his dogs Billy goes hunting and they catch two or three coons every night. Billy’s grandpa wants to talk to him one day and tells him about a raccoon hunting competition and Billy goes to the competition with Old Dan, Little Ann, his dad and Grandpa. In the beauty competition Little Ann wins and gets a silver cup. In the hunting contest Billy makes it to the finals. On the last night of hunting grandpa trips and sprains his ankle but on the good side Billy wins the competition, gold cup and the jackpot of over 300 dollars. A week after the competition when Billy is hunting he realizes that he is hunting a mountain lion. After the hunt Billy understands how close he was to dying. When Billy comes home Old Dan died from a cut the lion gave him. Little Ann died shortly after from being
tosad to eat anything. The next day Billy’s dad tells him that that they are moving. On the day of their departure Billy visits his dogs grave and finds on top of it a red fern.
In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy wants two hunting dogs so badly it is almost unbearable. They live in the Ozarks, one of the greatest places to coon hunt. So when Billy finds an ad for two redbones, he is not sure what to do. Later, he decides to work for the money to buy the two redbone hounds. When Billy gets the money, his grandfather tells him he has to go into to town to get them. So he makes the journey. Once he gets there, everyone is staring at him because he is a country boy. He goes to the train station and picks up his puppies. On his way back, some mean boys start pulling on the dogs’ ears. Billy gets into a fight with them, and the marshal has to break it up. The trip home is difficult, and Billy even hears a mountain lion. Once he gets home, Billy is so happy to show his family his dogs.
Once he wakes up, he teaches his dogs how to hunt. When he thinks they are ready, he takes them out to hunt. And before long, Billy and his two little hounds have a coon treed. And though it takes him days to do it, he cuts down the tree. And once the coon is out, the dogs have him. He takes the dead coon and goes home to show his family. His mom makes a hat from that first coon. In a short time, Billy and his hounds are some of the best hunters in the Ozarks. Sometimes when Billy is at his Grandfather’s store, his grandfather brags about Billy and his dogs. Then he sees the Pritchards, and they tell him about the ghost coon. So they make a bet that Billy cannot catch it. Once he sees the coon, he sees the Pritchards’ Blue Tick hound. And then it starts to fight with Billy’s dogs, so one of the Pritchards tries to break it up but ends up falling on an axe and dying.
Then Billy’s grandfather tells him about a championship coon hunt. When they get there, they learn that they have to wait go hunting. But when they do, they qualify for the finals. On the night of the finals, it storms, and Billy’s grandfather gets hurt, but they still win. Soon after the championship, Billy and the dogs encounter a mountain lion, and one of the dogs dies, and the other dies soon after out of sadness. Then one day, when the family is at the grave, they see the red fern. It was Indian legend that red ferns grow where true love is found, and they could only be planted by angels.
