F. Scott Fitzgerald: Trimalchio: An Early Version of 'The Great Gatsby' (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald)

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is the first edition ever published of Trimalchio, an early and complete version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald wrote the novel as Trimalchio and submitted it to Maxwell Perkins, his editor at Scribner's, who had the novel set in type and sent the galleys to Fitzgerald in France. Fitzgerald then virtually rewrote the novel in galleys, producing the book... (read more)

Catapulted Fitzgerald to fame and fortune, but, truth be told, it's a work of juvenilia. Very precocious, but a period piece today (albeit a fascinating period piece)....Every sentence screams out to be taken seriously as the work of a major writer. He would get there soon enough.

Have you ever wanted to strangle a character from a book? Read this book and you will feel it. Shallow and irritating characters that need a good swift kick in the.,.....ugh. I disliked the book. The story was just ok and the "profoundness" that it was supposed to hold was lacking. Hardley worth the read despite the fact that it is supposed to be a classic.

I think a lot of people misunderstand/stood this book. Many were fascinated (as we still are) by this glimpse into the lives of the rich/famous. A classic if for no other reason than that it still speaks to us about obsession - whether it be about money or love.

Seemed disjointed - not Fitzgerald's best.

Ultimately, not as entertaining as the Star Trek episode of the same name. The second half of the book is better than the first half by a mile, and apparently the first half was written as a separate book altogether. The first part seems cobbled together, and is so chockablock with antiquated expressions and references to super-obscure nineteenth century writers that a dumb-dumb like myself kind of struggled through it. But the second half was actually pretty good, full of some meaningful insights and interesting character studies and stuff. Duh.

Possibly the best novel ever written, it provides a wonderful portrait of the "Jazz Age", and the equally greedy and self-absorbed Jay Gatsby and his insane love triangle with Tom and Daisy Buchannan.

I felt more and more like Fitzgerald's Amory as the pages went by - his beginning was mine & his ending I'm going to stray away from. I think in a way, the story was ghastly--but then that's what makes Fitzgerald worthwhile to me. Instantly loved.
