“The book Parlor Games is Maryka Biaggio’s debut novel and is told in the point-of-view of May Dugas. The book takes place in 1916 while May is on trial for extortion. As the trial unfolds, she recounts her eventful life up until present day (1916). May reveals her humble beginnings in Menominee, Michigan and takes us through her whirlwind of a life which includes many instances of manipulation and cunning. She wants desperately to find a man with whom she is in love but she also wants the security of having a hefty bank account that goes along with him. As this quest takes her around the globe, May soon realizes that a Pinkerton Agency detective is right on her trail and is always presenting himself at the most inopportune times.
This novel has become one of my favorite books. It captivated me with every page and it absolutely pained me to have to put it down. I was fascinated by the way Maryka Biaggio has May Dugas address the reader personally as “Dear reader”. This little nuance allows me to create a bond with the main character and makes me want to root for her in every situation she gets herself in. I would recommend Parlor Games to anyone who is looking for a book that can completely enthrall them in its well-written storyline.
