The story begins with the Logan children and their trek to school. The plot thickens as the children experience racist acts and begin to understand who the night riders really are and what they have to do to stop them. The family gets tired of ill treatment and decides to take a stand, these actions will follow with threats and the fear of loosing what they hold most dear, their land. On one ill-fated night, the Logan children will have to stick together, save a friend in need, and stand by as their father has to make one of the hardest decisions ever.

  • Cassie Logan: She is the narrator of this book. She has a very sassy and positive attitude. Nine years old.
  • Stacey Logan: He is very mature and strong he is 13 years old and is T.J's best friend except when T.J is in trouble with R.W and Melvin. Incredibly loyal to family and friends even when they don't deserve it. Oldest of the Logan children.
  • T. J. Avery: Very sneaky. T.J.'s parents are sharecroppers and don't make a lot of money. T.J. Is repeating the same grade, last year he failed Mary Logan's class.
  • Little Man (Clayton Chester Logan): Little Man is the youngest of the Logan family and treasures reading and staying clean. Scenes that epitomize this fact: Bus getting him dirty on the way to school, not wanting the book at school. Loves his brothers and his sister Cassie. Five years old.
  • Christopher-John: He is a bright 7 year old and is the 2nd youngest in the Logan Family. He wants to stay out of trouble but can't ever speak up for himself. His best friend is Claude Avery.
  • Papa (David Logan): He is a great Father and good husband and take care of the family even if they are poor. He works on the railroad to get money for the taxes and cotton for the Family to sell and live off of. He hired a man to protect his family while he was on the road his name is Mr.Morrison.
  • Mama (Mary Logan): She is a hard working woman and worries about things a lot especially if it occurs to her children she is very concerned about her children. School teacher.
  • Big Ma: Grandmother to the Logan children. Has two children: Papa and Uncle Hammer. She is always worried she is caring and helps the children mama and papa through many problems.
  • Mr. Morrison: Mr.Morrison is a strong man that protects the Logan Family and takes good care of them while Papa is out on the road. Formerly worked for the railroad.
  • Jeremy: He is white and his family is racist and is still friends with the Logans. Outcast in his family. Sleeps in a treehouse. He gives the Logan's a Christmas present.
  • Lillian Jean: She is very rude to Cassie and picks on Little Man and Christopher John. Cassie will eventually get some well planned revenge on Lillian Jean.
  • Mr. Jamison: Mr.Jamison is a white lawyer that bought land from Mr.Granger and gave half of it to the Logan's.
  • Harlan Granger: He keeps on trying to ask Mama to sell him their land. He is a very rich plantation owner. The Logan's land use to be Harlan Granger. Definitely the most wealthy man in town.
  • Melvin Simms: He stirs up trouble and acts like he is T.J's friend and he really isn't.... Breaks into a store and beats T.J to death.
  • Kaleb Wallace: They run a General store and are mean to the Avery's and Logan's as well as the Simmse's family...
  • Little Willie Wiggins: He is a very nice boy that always would hang out with Cassie,Stacey,Little Man, and Christopher John. He would tell the children all the news and drama that went on...
  • Miss Crocker: Miss Crocker is Little Man and Cassie's teacher. Doesn't understand why Logan children are rejecting the books they were given
  • Grandpa: Bought the Logan land from Harlan Granger.
