Barley, a curator of the Museum of Mankind in London, most delightfully debunks the myth that anthropological field work in a remote area is an unpainful experience. Rather, he shows it to be a constant, albeit often humorous in retrospect, challenge. Although a specialist on West Africa, this volume records his trip to the Toraja area of Sulewesi, Indonesia and, subsequently, his bringing four wood carvers to London to build a traditional rice house in the museum. With constant tongue in cheek he records coping in a non-Western society and then reverses the perspective by describing the impressions of the Indonesians in London.
