Description

Barley, a curator of the Museum of Mankind in London, most delightfully debunks the myth that anthropological field work in a remote area is an unpainful experience. Rather, he shows it to be a constant, albeit often humorous in retrospect, challenge. Although a specialist on West Africa, this volume records his trip to the Toraja area of Sulewesi, Indonesia and, subsequently, his bringing four wood carvers to London to build a traditional rice house in the museum. With constant tongue in cheek he records coping in a non-Western society and then reverses the perspective by describing the impressions of the Indonesians in London. An essential book that will be hard to put down for anyone interested in going to a Third World country. - Donald Clay Johnson, Univ. of Minnesota Lib., Minneapolis Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
