This book has been reprinted and released under the title "Contempt". It is a careful and detailed examination of a marriage that is falling apart. Riccardo Molteni, who is a writer, decides to take a job writing a screenplay so that he can earn more money and provide his wife with a flat of their own rather than renting a furnished place. Not long after this decision, Emilia begins pulling away and finally states that she no longer loves him. It seems like the harder he tries to win her back, the more her emotions harden. The whole narration is from the husband's perspective and we follow him on his tortuous mental examination of what he's done or isn't doing to cause all of this. I ended up liking the book more than I thought I would but I just kept wanting to shake both of them and say, "Talk it out!!"
