A young Indian girl is forced to go to a white man's boarding school, add an "American" name to her own, and gradually become assimilated into a white man's ideal of the perfect Indian. However, she rebels against it and holds on to her own traditions, as well as trying to protect her frail best friend Pretty Eagle and fight against the class bully. A touching story.

Check out http://oyate.org/books-to-avoid/myHeart.html to see why you should avoid reading this book at all costs if you need to read a book about historical fiction or American Indians. This book is chalk full of historical inaccuracies and completely lacks cultural authenticity. Do not read this book. There are many other better books to read. Like The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich.
