Excellent, evidence-based approach to distance learning. Avoids taking sides in the "which is best" ISD fight. Doesn't hesitate to point out what is not known, what is speculation, and what is pure myth.

Clark and Mayer are prominent experts in the field of e-learning (and other training) and their book gets down to the real nuts and bolts of developing e-learning content. Their very practical advice stems from scientific research.

Using scientific evidence, they provide information about how to apply numerous principles. They explain the psychological and practical reasons for each step. They offer examples, counter-examples, and screen shots to illustrate use of these principles and practices.

Topics include text, visuals, audio, practice, chat, discussion boards, lesson design, segmenting and sequencing, games and simulations, virtual coaching, synchronous and asynchronous learning, and more.

Clark and Mayer have done readers a great service by reviewing the scientific literature, interpreting it, and providing us with very accessible, easy to understand advice about how to apply the research for optimal results. I highly recommend this work as a must-read for any instructional designer, novice or expert. Bravo!
