This was the first book that I read by Sun Shuyun and I loved it! She writes beautifully and her background as a filmmaker comes across in her prose especially when she makes observations about the places and people she encounters on her journey in trying to retrace the footsteps of the famous Buddhist monk Xuanzang.

I have been fortunate to visit many of the places the author refers to in the book, including the Chinese section of the fabled Silk Road going as far as Kashgar....
