Didn’t Like It

I wouldn't have chosen to read this book, but it was donated to my classroom. I tried to use it along side the grandparent project that I was doing, where students interview and write a story about a grandparent person in their lives. There are quite a few allusions, and some tie ins to history...

This book is set in coastal Maryland during WWII, the language seems old fashioned but interesting and lends realism to the story. Wheezy's crush on a man 53 years her senior is kind of creepy, but her friendship with Call her crabbing buddy is genuine. A bit disappointing when Call marries Wheez's twin after WWII. Strong beginning, predictable ending

I tried to use it along side the grandparent project that I was doing, where students interview and write a story about a grandparent person in their lives. There are quite a few allusions, and some tie ins to history and geography. Not a real page turner though. I will probably use it in lit circles in the future.

Mr. Kimzey's Class at the American School in Singapore

S.L. : This is a book of a young lass, who's sister is talented at everything, but mostly ... her voice. This is a tale of Sara Louise Bradshaw, who has always been her sister Caroline's shadow, and how she strikes her own light soon. But to do that, she needs to find her herself, who she is, and what she wants to be.
    Thoroughly recommended to all.

This is officially an all time favorite. It's in the top ten. Every single one of us in this world that has a sibling has once felt what Sara Louise is feeling. Jeez, I still get that feeling alot even now. Come on. It's just not fair. It always seems like your the second choice and your sibling is the one the whole world is in love with. Why can't you have that feeling too? What's stopping you? Well, sort of alot. When your lifelong friend marries your sister, and a family friend that you sort of liked paid for you sister's scholarship to an expensive college although your the one who helped him through the hard times and befriended him, and even your parents baby your sister, who can NOT be jealous? I think everyone has something in this book. It's relateable, its funny, and its family reality.

I loved this book. Melancholy and poingnant with subtle yet defingng twists. Sarah Louise Bradshaw has been forever over shadowed by her perfect twin sister, Caroline just like the biblical Jacob did to his twin brother, Esau. A comming of age story.
