Despite the horrible - and yet teasing - feeling from the eternal doubt that Machado de Assis gets us in, the way the story runs through, is disappointing.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really don't have words to describe it. Amazing, delightful, misterious, contagious. It's a pitty that most of people read it with a pair of blind eyes, without an open minded, an open heart to the breath-taking irony of Machado de Assis. Those who hated it had just made a mistake, they simply don't understand what they've read.

A classic of the brazilian literature, wether you want to or not, your teacher forces you to read it. But hey, it's amazing! The way the narator talks about his own life, the way he ruins his on life in the story, the way he makes you believe things happened the way he thinks. It's up to you decide if he was right or not. In my opinion, he was a jerk.

Machado de Assis is a Brazilian writer; quite skilfull, but his pace becomes boring after a while. This story specifically is sort of an Othelo-like; with deceit, unsure cheating (it's not clear in the book) and lots of questions.
