“Excellent Book for Young Adults”
Michael J. Garreffa wrote this review Tuesday, March 19, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No“Setting: Early 1800's-farm in Maine and town of Wiscasset, Maine
Characters: Will and Cassie
Problem: While chopping wood on the farm Will hears Cassie scream and his axe comes down into his leg instead of the wood. Will's future looks bleak as he recovers from his injury. All he ever wanted was to work on the farm throughout his life. The injury doesn't heal well so the doctor must amputate Will's leg off. Now Will must cope with the fact that he will never work on a farm. Cassie stays at Will's side the entire time doing everything she can to help him heal. She feels it is her fault Will was injured.
Effort to Solve: Cassie and Will go to live with their older sister and her husband in town. While Cassie continues to help heal Will they both start to see there may be more to life then just the farm.
Conclusion: Will has a real knack for carving wood and finds a job offer from one of the wood workmen. Cassie finds her calling in nursing people back to health and becomes involved with helping the local doctor. They both find a new life outside of the farm.
Recommendation: Ages 9-14 would enjoy this book. Some parts are a little graphic, but nothing they could not handle. It is a great story about family and change. Awesome message that life doesn't always go as planned, but that is not always a bad thing and new doors can open along the way.”
“Will Ames lives on a farm in a small town of Woolwich I soon to be the state of mine. When Will was cutting logs one day his sister Cassie was run from a snake. Cassie’s screaming made will let go of the ax and it cut his leg. Will was in a room that was called the birth and death room. There he lay for days as his leg got worse and worse. They needed a doctor and Wills father wouldn’t get one. Cassie had to do something so she when to Wiscasset to get her older sister Alice. Alice got Dr. Theobald’s to try and help wills leg. The doctor amputated wills leg to stop it from getting worse. After a long winter of healing Cassie and will go to their sister Alice in Wiscasset for the summer to see if will could get a new leg. Will soon learns of new beginnings with a life in a town.
I enjoyed this book a lot because of the way Will’s mind and attitude change after the first couple chapters. Also I like how every chapter started with Cassie writing in her journal about what happen or what is going to happen. I think this book will be right for any one who would like the setting to be in the past and who likes reading about life challenge. This book would be age appropriate for 8-12 year olds.
