Mr. Gass, as usual, does not disappoint in this collection of memorable insight from a remarkable man of letters. I nonetheless remain partial to "Fiction and the Figures of Life," a much earlier collection perhaps showing us Gass at his best, and I simply must recommend his formidable philosophical essay "On Being Blue" to anyone desiring to have their "consciousness caressed."
