I lived in Crete during my early childhood, in a village not that much different from the atmosphere Kazantzakis is describing in this book. He is magic. He manages to bring Cretan world alive so well. Unforgettable characters and "Kazantzakian" philosophy. I have read him in Greek; I' m not so sure if he can be translated to any faithful extent. For a man from Crete "Freedom and Death" is the Ultimate Kazantzakis book. It feels familiar, a part of your world, a part of your soul. And yes,...
