“Mark Twain holds a mirror up to humanity in all of his writing, but in writing his autobiography he also incisively turns the mirror upon himself. Although he didn't shy away from doing that in his other works, in The Autobiography... he digs deeper into what makes him "him". And by "him", I obviously mean Mark Twain. Delving into Samuel Langhorne Clemens is an entirely different matter.
