“The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is definitley a series that girls and boys most ages will enjoy, and certainly a series that I enjoy. Very funny and well written and Jeff Kinney (just like Jacqueline Wilson) is very good at portraying the character of a child and writing their feelings. Very funny - and thats what I like about this series. The books don't really focus on a main event - the story kind of spirals out into many events and stuff. I enjoyed reading this book. Would I recommend this book? Yes. ”Merp wrote this review Monday, December 3, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“I enjoyed this book a lot as I do most books like it. It was a nice break from all of the serious and sad books I have been reading lately. It made me laugh and it made me happy! This book is diary of a boy named Greg Heffley and he talks about everything that happens in a day or that has been happening in his life. This book is mostly about Valentines day and the upcoming Valentines day dance! It also features his uncles who comes to stay with his family for awhile because he lost most of his money and everything. Greg is in middleschool and there is Valentines day dance coming up and he isn't very attractive to girls (but from his point of view is very attractive and can get almost any girl he wants). He thinks he needs a date to the dance so first he tries to make it look like all the girls want him by sending himself Valentines day grams so that real girls will think that he's hot. He also gets his best friend Rowley to be his wing-man. Rowley is part of the student council and Greg thinks that the meetings are a good opportunity for Rowley to help him get girls. So far no one wants to go with Greg. He tries to write a couple of girls a note to ask them to the dance, but they both decline. A couple days before the dance, Greg gets a great idea! There was this one girl who's date said he couldn't make it to the dance due to being busy with his family so Greg saw an opportunity. Greg actually thought through his plan and realized that there wasn't enough time to try and get Rowely a date so he thought that the three of them should just go as a group of "friends", but Greg planned on trying to get closer to the girl. She agreed to go as a group of friends and thought it would be fun. They planned on going out to dinner before the dance and Greg wanted a special ride to take them places. He didn't have enough money for a limo and he didn't want his mom/dad to take him because their car has cheerios crushed into the seats and isn't very clean. Rowley's dad ends up agreeing to take them everywhere. After Greg and Rowley are together the night of the dance they go to pick up the girl from her house. Rowley has a big hat on and his moms scarf around his neck because Greg saw two spots on his face that looked like chicken pox and Greg needed Rowley to go to the dance because his dad was driving them, so Greg put makeup, the hat, and a scarf on Rowley to try to cover them up. Since Rowley looked really weird, Greg went up to the house to get the girl. When he got there she was still getting ready so he was just awkwardly sitting there with her dad for awhile. She eventually came downstairs and they left. Greg reserved a fancy restaurant for them to eat dinner at, but Greg had been sitting in the back with Rowley's dad's greasy vacuum cleaner so his suit got greasy and his greasy suit made getting into the fancy restaurant difficult. Instead they went to a family restaurant and Rowley got his tie cut off because it is supposed to be a "fun" restaurant. Greg paid for everyone's dinner and he just barely had enough money! After dinner they went to the dance. At first, the dance was okay, but then a bunch of senior citizens came and said that they had already rented out the gym so the gym was split in two halves. Greg's uncle was DJ-ing the dance and he is also selling his "Botson" shirts. They were supposed to say "Boston" on them but when the guy sold them to him he didn't realize they had a typo on them. The dance got really lame after the Seniors came and after their meeting they even went to the dance and started eating all of the food and stuff. I don't want to give away the ending to it because I think that the ending of the dance and the book is pretty interesting and entertaining so I don't want to spoil it!
I love hilarious books like this! I thought it was so funny and I couldn't put it down while reading it! I like all of the characters and their personalities, especially Greg. He is so full of himself and I think that is funny! I also like Rowley! He is just hilarious and I like him because he doesn't even try to be. I like the storyline, too. I always like books about Valentine's day just for no reason! I also love reading diary style books, so this was definitely fun to read!
There are not many things that I can think of that I disliked about this book. Sometimes I didn't like how the story would just jump from one event to another, but since it was a diary it made sense. There isn't that much to dislike about a book like this! I automatically like anything that can make me laugh and be happy, so I like this book a lot!”
