“Although known for a sympathetic view of Satan, Paradise Lost is still a work of pro-christian thought. If one were to concentrate on Satan alone the first parts of the book would be all that is needed, as the later parts tend to be Milton's retelling of the book of Genesis.
It appeared to me that Milton was attempting to falsely lengthen parts of his poetry. There were memorable lines/stanzas here and there, yet I found much filler in the middle chapters.
In all I'd have to say that the controversy this book gained when it was published is all that serves it's popularity today. Otherwise this would be another book lost to all but the poets.”
