First Sentence

As soon as my eyes opened I reached for my watch on the bed table. I knew already it was close to 3:30 AM. Over months of restless sleep I'd developed an ability to sense what time it was the moment I found myself awake, as if every minute through the long night had its own familiar scent that I could instantly recognize. Guessing the time had become a sort of grim pleasure, a little bit of consolation for being awake in the first place. It didn't matter whether I was sleeping at home in Berkeley, in a hotel room in Ames, Iowa, or in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It made no difference when I went to bed, or what seemed to have brought me out of sleep in the first place--or what seemed to have brought me out of sleep in the first place--a shout ourside the window, a nervous dream, a knotted back muscle. I nearly always guessed within ten minutes of the clock.
