Told through the perspective of the child that she was, Jennifer tells of the harrowing six years of her life, from the ages of 5 to 11. “Ahh! This book was sooo good! Nobody should EVER have to go through what Jenny went through. Everything in her life goes bad and every time things start to look up something bad happens again! Her brother is a freaking jerk-- especially at the beginning. And I REALLY hate her step mother.”

“Lauck's books are unforgettable. Her writing style is brilliant. I first read these three memoirs in the summer of 2007. I have re-read them since.”

I loved it, but I suggested it to a few friends, and they found it much too depressing. I loved it so much, I rushed out to get the sequel. Jennifer Lauck's simple, to the point writing is perfect as the point of view of the protagonist, 6 year old Jenny.”

The thing I liked best about this book, was the author's writing style. I loved how in character she managed to be the whole time, never seeming older than she really was. It made the whole book seem more real. ”

Written remarkably well in the pitch perfect voices of a child growing into a young woman.”
“Loved, loved, loved this heartbreaking book. If you suffered during your childhood (and let's face it, who didn't), you'll reconsider how bad off you were when you read this memoir about a little girl who could never count on the people around her to take care of her. Sad, but ultimately uplifting, it really does speak to your heart.”

I was delighted to see that there was a sequel, because quite frankly, I had to know what happened. Only a heart of the hardest, coldest stone would not feel for this little girl. ”
