“In the first years of this millennium, one of my heroes--Anderson Valley Advertiser publisher Bruce Anderson--accurately wrote that "there's been a revival of interest in poetry, lots of young people coming to it via hip-hop and slams, although, as always, not many young people survive the high-school poetry experience, fewer still the college poetry experience, fewer still Garrison Keillor." He was discussing Charles Simic, a poet, Anderson wrote, who is both "understandable and moving." Simic himself--in a moving and understandable series of essays collected in 2010--wrote eloquently on the subject of poetry's overall health among the young (Confessions of a Poet Laureate). Simic's Pulitzer Prize-winner, The World Doesn't End, may not be his most understandable, but such is its succulent, moving fun. This slim volume of prose poems best showcases the scalping surprises at work in Simic's imagination, each a resonant, impressionistic still life from a next new, wild, violent world. The world of a Charles Simic book may not end, but the book does. Yet this small, nearly pitch perfection collection contains a cascade of unforgettable imagery: An empty room with an open window. "Ghost stories written as algebraic equations." "Identical Hamlets holding identical monkey-faced spinning toys." Unforgettable, it never fails to buoy my faith in poetry. --Jason Kirk (Twitter: @brasswax)”
