    • The novel begins with a look at the regular life of the most successful international jewel thief in the world--Gregg Hadyn. A sixth generation thief, Gregg has been raised from childhood to be the "best thief in the business," and he hasn't backed down from that challenge. After escaping easily from a New York heist, and considering a little chase by the feds to be a fun addition to his normal heisting, Gregg begins to plan his next heist: lifting a diamond (the Targhetti Diamond of India), which is currently touring the United States. The art museum from which Gregg decides to steal the magnificent gem has just installed the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art security system available: Sonic Sensor. It's supposedly impenetrable, but Gregg has already developed a way to break it.

While Gregg plots the heist of the Targhetti Diamond, former Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigative Division (CID) of the FBI, Denny Garret, (who is now the director of a covert espionage team, the Strategic Intelligence Unit, or SIU, which is hiding under the cover of the FBI), is still plotting to catch Gregg--something he has been unable to do for the last twelve years. Denny has always recognized Gregg's talent, and now that Denny is involved in covert espionage, he wants to catch Gregg for an entirely different reason. Denny wants Gregg working for him--stealing for the U.S. Government. Denny takes a little time off from his new covert espionage job to pursue Gregg one last time--and he takes his beautiful new Probationary Operative Carly Macklin with him.

Even though Carly succeeds in grabbing Gregg's attention, Gregg still steals the Targhetti Diamond and gets away. When Carly pursues him in an attempt to arrest him, Gregg "kidnaps" her, but he still doesn't know she's working as a federal agent. When he finally does a search in the FBI database on her picture the following morning (thinking she may be another thief working with his old friend, Derek Clayton) who has been trying to get the diamond from him, Gregg finds her FBI profile. Angry and hurt, he drops her off at a nearby town and goes underground--deep.

But Gregg can't forget Carly. She has totally captivated him with her stunning beauty, incredible personality, witty intelligence, and... morals. Gregg has never met anyone with such a strict moral code--or any moral code, for that matter. He finds her refreshing...and...intriguing.

And Carly has also fallen hopelessly in love with Gregg.

In a last ditch effort to catch Gregg, Denny sets up another sting--now that he knows Gregg has fallen for Carly--believing he can exploit Gregg's Achilles heel. In an extravagent plot, Denny sets Gregg up to believe Carly is in grave danger. Gregg takes the bait (again thrown off his usual genius game because of his "blind" love for Carly) and rushes in to save her.
