“LG and I listened to this on the way home from Nebraska...about 1/2 way through. It's pretty good at weaving a story in between a depiction of Victorian England. Perry picks a main theme for each of her books. This one is about the new sewer system that was put in after Prince Albert's death of cholera [from foul water?]. I find Perry's female characters a bit ahead of their time concerning women's rights and somewhat over blown. The story perhaps is more detailed than it needs to be but generally enlightening and engrossing enough.
Well, I finished all 10 CDs...too long and too repetitive! That is my one beef with Anne Perry. She has the main character constantly mentally reworking already stated issues. Real life people do this, of course, but feel it is not the best writing style. She could take lessons from Chaim Potok's work. But then he was a master of concise characterization and narrative. This was the best Perry of the bunch that I checked out tho.”
“Another well-written, suspenseful story of William and Hester Monk. What wonderful characters!”

Perry always creates wonderfully vibrant characters and this one had Monk once again working for the police force, battling with some of his past character flaws as he seeks to establish respect amongst the officers under him in his new position with the river police. Very nice, tightly woven story!”
