On the first day of the Year of the Dragon, Fu Wong (the cruel owner of Celestial House for Homeless Boys) consents to an adoption between 12-year-old orphan Little Tiger to his master Ming Wu (a 2,000-year-old dragon disguised as an old gardener). Little Tiger quickly learns that being the adopted son and only heir of an ancient shapeshifter has upended his world. Fu Wong has known the truth about the gardener for years and orders his men to kill the boy and seize the garden for his own evil plans. Being a creature of foresight, wisdom and magic, Ming Wu anticipates the attack on his garden, the very seat of his ancient power. Entrusting him with two dragon eggs and a sacred book of magic, Ming Wu tells his young heir that he must return to claim the inheritance hidden in the garden. The old man transforms into the Dragon King of Beijing for the last time, sacrificing himself to carry his son safely to Tarpon Springs, Florida.

The forgotten palace, stripped of ornaments and statues, was now a gardener’s home (although its upturned, swooping eaves paid homage to its imperial lineage). And when sunlight hit those red-glazed tiles, the roof blazed like dragon fire.”
