Normally I hate the politics part of historical romances and I'll even go as far as to say that I hate the history part (I know, that kind of kills the whole point of historical romances... but things always get so complicated and everything goes over my head). Surprisingly, though, this book was extremely captivating and tragic (politics and history and all). I loved how it ended, while at the same time, I hated it.

Having read and enjoyed Dark Angels, Koen’s prequel to Through A Glass Darkly, I looked forward to reading this book. However, I wasn’t able to garner more than a mild interest in any of the principal characters, and the storyline did little to capture my imagination. Further, the Alice (Duchess of Tamworth) portrayed in this novel seems so vastly different than the younger Alice presented in Dark Angels that I couldn't reconcile the two.
