The author Douglas Farah was on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and it seemed like an interesting book. My only complaint is that about half way through it starts to repeat over and over again. It almost seems like it is the same story told from a different prospective. Once the case is made that we are dealing with a bad man with deep connections it is harder to continue reading.

A terrific tale of wild west capitalism, filled with larger than life characters. A swell yarn except that it is true and the consequences are horrific.

Journalists Douglas Farah and Stephen Braun follow the trail of arms dealer Victor Bout in their exhaustively researched book. Their investigation follows the Russian from his early start chartering planes loaded with weapons to the hot spots of Africa to his growing influence in the various civil wars that plague the continent and the extent of his reach to the Middle East in later years . Along the way the authors explain the complicated legal and political dealings that Bout employed to keep his business running. Along the way the book is illustrated with tales of Bouts occasional run ins such as with the Taliban and African warlords. It also details the utter failure of America and European countries to arrest and bring him to justice through inaction, red-tape and even complicity. Almost every facet of the business is explored, from aircraft purchasing to registration to crews and more.
