The roar of the Aer Lingus jet as it descended towards the runway at Dusseldorf Express Airport was like an explosion of thunder in James Lessing's ears. A regular air traveller, he was not frightened, but he was hyped-up with anxiety because the flight had left Dublin an hour later than scheduled. Now he too was running late. He would have to rush around like an athlete as soon as he landed and get his car out of the airport and onto the autobahn as quickly as possible. Just the thought of it exhausted him. For too many years he had been rushing through life as if constantly ten minutes late for an appointment; terrified of missing out, terrified of being found out, always shadow-boxing with his shame while still delighting in the thrill of deceit.
