I just finished reading this book and I must say it is a trip. I really enjoyed it once I got past the first 11 pages! The book's style wanders a bit but I can see why is was extremely popular for over 100 years. I did have to look up izard- it's a type of deer. I know I shall take heat for this - but Radcliff was easier to read than Austin! It takes me several weeks to make it thru an Austin book and 6 days to do Radcliff.

Didn’t Like It

I'm supposed to like this book, right? I mean, it's the quintessential Gothic romance. Well, I'm sorry Mrs. Radcliffe, but I didn't like your novel. I found it tedious. The abundance of travel made me tired. I never got even moderately invested in our heroine; among other things, she fainted far too easily and often. And then there was the complete and total absence of anything supernatural whatsoever (not a drawback for everyone, I realise, but I like a bit of the supernatural in my Gothic...
