“My review for Booklist:
Robards’ newest, after The Last Victim (2012), finds tough tow-truck driver and single mom Samantha shocked to discover a badly beaten man in the trunk of the BMW she’s repossessing. FBI agent Daniel Panterro, involved in a complicated sting operation to shut down a vicious drug cartel, realizes that Sam’s intervention has saved his life while endangering hers. He can’t tell her he’s one of the good guys, so even though she rescues him from bleeding to death, he must drag her into the witness-protection sham that serves as his cover. However, Sam won’t leave her four-year-old son. Knowing little Tyler is in danger because the assassins can trace Sam to her home via the information on the tow truck, Danny agrees to take the boy along. When they get to the house, the babysitter is dead and Tyler is hiding under his bed. Slowly Danny realizes their enemies include a mole inside the FBI. Robards pours on the suspense while portraying a compelling couple who complement each other’s strengths.

“When Samantha Jones (Sam), the single-parent of 4 year old Tyler, hooks her ancient tow truck up to a sleek, black MBW late one night, she finds a wounded man tied up in the trunk. There is hardly time to consider her dilemma before she is unceremoniously dumped in behind him. This unlikely meeting of two strangers randomly bound together in danger forms the crux of the novel, but is also the grist for the author's romantic subplot, which at times rivals the action around it. Sam soon realizes that she is in big trouble as she has landed in the middle of an FBI undercover scheme. Her handsome trunk-mate is not all he appears to be but the one thing they both know is they are likely to soon be dead.
"Shiver" provides dramatic chases, betrayals and the simmering, if reluctant attraction between Marco and Samantha. Of course, the purveyor of romance cannot resist the opportunity to place her characters in a love/hate dynamic that ratchets up the consequences of the chase, a misbegotten romance that will not be denied in spite of the odds. Though not a great literary feat, Robards' storytelling skills are well-honed, plot edgy, her ability to tap into women's psyches impressive.
One of the best books I have read by this author and I really did enjoy it...so, 5 stars.”
