“Autism spectrum is now affecting 1 in 88 boys. 70% of parents of autistic children wind up separated or divorced. Young adults with autism spectrum are usually unemployed and unemployable. Vaccines have been blamed and exonerated. Those without autism in their reality have little understanding of how it affects a child. Those with autism in their reality cannot understand why. Why them? Why their child?

This book explores the why, however in a roundabout way. It gives a glimpse of how and speaks of unconditional love.

Why 3 stars? Because it took too long, IMHO, to cut to the chase. I didn't quit the book because I knew Lisa Genova to be an excellent writer. And she is. Maybe it was my impatience, but I just didn't find it compelling reading until about half way through. In fact, I almost thought it was a bland variety of women's fiction. And while I'd love to quote the remarkable part of this book - I can't do so without spoilers - but there, towards the end, are a couple of pages that if for nothing else, are worth the other 300+ pages. Profound, thoughtful, enlightening and applicable food for thought for anyone who reads through to the epilogue.”

“Pam's March 2013 Book Club: I like this book. Beth who recently found out her husband was having an affair began to realize she needed to figure out what she wanted from her life since she had been a wife and mother for so long. She decided to write a book and ended up telling the story of a boy named Anthony who was autistic. She briefly met the little boy on the beach years prior to starting her book. Her book really explained what an autistic child is feeling. ”
