The book begins with Harrison living as a foster child on the farm of Mr and Mrs Constable. He has to work hard or suffer a beating at the hands of Mr. Constable. Then Mr. Constable dies in an accident and Harrison is adopted by the Kellys. His new father is a football coach and because Harrison is strong from years of working on a farm he joins the football team. He is instantly successful at the running back position, and everything is going well until he hurts his knee. Upon taking an MRI the doctors discover that Harrison has bone cancer. They amputate his lower leg and Harrison has to deal with the fact that he will never play football again. Then Major Bauer a friend of the Kellys arrives. He tells Harrison about Jeffrey Keith and Neil Parry amputees who were able to play sports again. The major helps Harrison rehabilitate so he can play again. Through all the struggles Harrison perseveres and does eventually play football again.
