“Disappointing treatment of an intriguing premise. With only 6 months until an asteroid destroys earth, the protagonist decides to continue performing his duties as a police officer. He does not do so out of a committment to duty however, which would have made him more appealing, but rather out of personal interest. He has always wanted to be a detective, and attrition resulting from officers walking off the job has given him the opportunity. People are living out their end days seeking pleasure and, in solving a rather mundane murder, that is what our hero does as well. Quite a let down. ”Elizabeth L wrote this review Sunday, August 4, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This is the first book I've read on my Kindle Fire and I enjoyed my reading experience, I was nervous at first because I thought I would miss the feel of holding an actual physical book but to my surprise and delight, I found this was a quicker and somewhat easier way to read a book.
As for the book itself I did enjoy it, it has a very unique plot in that it takes place in the not so far off future and an asteroid is heading to impact with the Earth in just 6 months time and all of mankind is set to be wiped out.
But the real plot of the book is the murder and the investigation of the murder by one of the last working police detectives in the United States. There is a dark tone to the story which makes sense with the end of the world coming and all that entails, suicides, people leaving their families and jobs to fulfill their dreams and get everything done on their bucket lists.
The mystery is good and the characters are very well drawn, this is the first book in a trilogy and I intend to get the next book, I think I will also read this one on my Kindle Fire as well.”
“Amusing...but it didn't really grab me.”David S. Wellhauser wrote this review Wednesday, July 17, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Loved the sci-fi mystery mix! Ben Winters has written a well-plotted unputdownable novel! An asteroid is about to collide with the earth and detective Hank Palace discovers a body in the McDonalds which appears to be suicide but his gut tells him it's murder. Read this book and find out how he proves his murder premise! You won't be dissatisfied!”Eadie B wrote this review Wednesday, July 17, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Imaginative, detailed, engrossing. A great murder mystery set in a possible near future.”Ann T wrote this review Sunday, May 19, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The premise is so awesome that it could have carried the book even if the author hadn't put any effort into the rest of it, but he did.
The sci-fi plotline could have felt tacked on to the detective plotline, but it's actually well integrated.
Good for fans of twisty detective novels and apocalypse enthusiasts.”
