Narrated by Holter Graham. Years after serving in Iraq, Army private Bartle wrestles with demons and guilt after the gruesome death of a fellow soldier. Graham reads in a grim and terse voice befitting Bartle's tightly coiled emotions and memories. But Powers' frequently ornate prose, including drawn-out metaphorical descriptions, made for a bumpy listening experience. Many was the time I backtracked several seconds wondering, "WHAT is he trying to say?!" In the more captivating moments of the story, I was yanked into Bartle's harsh reality by a cutting expletive or brutally raw observation.
