“What I did like about the book:
No matter if R. L. Stine is writing for adults or children he is a master story teller. The book has an amazing opening and peeked my interest right away.
I appreciated that the writing was to the point. Some authors *cough, cough Stephen King* get way too caught up in the beauty of words. Sometimes, I just want to hear a good story and that is what this book gave me.
The thrilling aspect that kept me turning the pages fast and furious. Even at 300+ pages it felt like an extremely fast read and though I couldn't read it in one sitting I tried to get back to it every chance I got.
The ending really moved me, shocked me and left me with my mouth open. I was so sad it was over.
I easily got involved with the characters!
What I didn't like about the book:
During some of the more stressful moments, toward the end, the dialogue felt really forced and didn't feel natural at all. Their speech sounded child like ( like an old Goosebump novel perhaps?).
The title itself is hinted at but doesn't have any real place in the story, no substance. There is really is no explanation about what causes the Red Rain or why the book is even named that in the first place.
I was really let down by the lack of horror. The back of the book is filled with reviews by respectable authors claiming how scary this book is. Although it is thrilling, there is only one scene that is truly horrifying where I cringed a lot. I have to wonder if these authors were just making these statements out of respect to such a long time author. I kept expecting something terrifying but it never really happened.
There have been a lot of negative reviews saying that this is just one of R. L. Stine's juvenile novels with some language and sex in it. While I think that is half true, I'm not sure it is a bad thing. The dialogue could have been better but I think that is true of even his children books. He's an excellent story teller and this was an excellent story. Except for a hiccup or two, I couldn't put the book down until the shocking ending that I really, really loved!!! I'd recommend ignoring the negative reviews and reading this for yourself, you might be surprised how much you like it despite some of the bumps.
