“It was a weird book. Good, but I guessed the plot just by reading the description and I was pretty accurate.”Sami Alyx wrote this review yesterday. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Blink Once is a very interesting book. the author caught my attention right at page one. i liked this book alot because it has all different kinds of feelings throughout the whole book. its about a boy named west that has gotten in a bike accident and he is in the hospital but doesnt know what happened to him at first and doesnt remember a thing. he has a girlfriend but things dont work out for long. west meets another patient in the hospital that sneaks over to his room when nurses arent around her name is olivia and they become best friends and she teaches him some ways he can answer her without talking because he is paralyzed. which he finds outs because olivia tells him everything he wants to know. this story is very touching within the love connection between west and olivia. although it is very sad when west is also thinking about his ex-girlfriend. the book is also suspenseful at some points because things go wrong with west in the hospital that makes the reader very nervous. i loved this book very much and i would definitely reccomend this book.”Felicia_Snyder wrote this review Tuesday, November 5, 2013. “Page-turner about an odd relationship that develops between West, a teen who has been paralyzed in a bike accident, and Olivia, a mysterious patient in the next room. Saying too much more would spoil the big plot twist that occurs toward the end. This should be good for teens looking for either romance or suspense.”Mrs. O'G wrote this review Sunday, July 7, 2013. “Full review on Reader's Dialogue: http://readersdialogue.blogspot.com/2012/12/blink-once.html
I love the tone of this story. West doesn't actually talk while he's in the Wilson center, but we get to know him fairly quickly by the way he tells the story, even without seeing him interact with Olivia. He tells the story with a sort of dry humor, but at the same time he's very serious and somber. It's an interesting mix.
The way the story moves from West's current experiences to his dreams and memories is really great. The tense shift from past to present in his dreams and memories makes his inner stories more immediate, which adds to the effect of the fog West is in while he's hospitalized. And the way they're interspersed at matching points, the way the end of each dream matches what's going on in real life, really made me wonder what the significance of his dreams are, where his memories are going to take him...
The mystery (mysteries, really) of what is really going on is really compelling. How does Olivia get away with everything she does, visiting West, stealing files from the nurses' station...? Who are these people West is dreaming about? What happened to the patient who was in his room before West, and is he connected to West or Olivia in any way?
It's really powerful when West recovers and finds out the truth about all this. Accepting the truth is hard for him, but I love how it affects him and how he manages to go one from there. Recovering and going back to normal life is hard enough, but it seems that experiencing this added bit of strangeness actually helps him get back on his feet mentally and emotionally, regardless of what everyone else thinks.”
“Owen wakes up and he can't move, can't talk, can't do anything but blink. Suddenly Olivia shows up and they develop a way of speaking two blinks means no, one blinks means yes. But there's something that seems off about all of this to Owen, what happened? Why is he the only one who can't move? Soon though he finds out the answers to his questions but the answers are what he least expected them to be. ”Madddie M wrote this review Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
