Jack Devins has just lost his four-year-old daughter, and maybe his mind. He's seeing things: clocks keep stopping at 1:20, a man in a mask is stalking him, and he hears his daughter's voice calling to him from the city's subway tunnels. One night, after hitting rock bottom he enters a tunnel and discovers a dark, surreal city beneath Manhattan where souls go to wander for all eternity. In this twisted, supernatural place--where hellhounds roam, trains fly, and the right station can take you into another dimension--Jack learns he has a one-time chance to save his daughter's soul. But he will have to sacrifice more than his life to do it. Meanwhile, high school sophomore Danny Devins is Jack's only son. Having lost his kid sister and now his father, who has mysteriously disappeared, Danny tries hard to fit in at St. Mary's Catholic High School, where he has just transferred. Danny has no friends, no athletic skills, and his moodiness makes him a target for bullies. He hates his life--until he saves a fellow student from sexual assault. This student--a girl named Katie Parsons--has an older brother named Matt who befriends Danny and initiates him into his small gang. Danny has finally found the friends he has always wanted. Now, with his family virtually gone from his life, Danny will do anything his friends want him to do, no matter how dangerous. When a rival gang inflicts the ultimate blow against Danny's social standing, he will agree to an act of violence so terrible it will leave his school forever changed. Unless his father can return in time to stop him.
